The Best Places to Stay in Devon for Families

Devon is the perfect place for a family holiday in the UK, no matter your budget. This slice of heaven is where thousands of people venture each year for their family-friendly holidays. Whether you are looking for a beach break in the UK, an action-packed holiday, or simply somewhere away from home to spend some quality time together, there is a Devon holiday to suit all.

As much as a trip to a hotel is lovely, often thoughts of a family holiday include your own space. The privacy of a self-catered holiday cottage often far outweighs the formalities of a hotel. After a long day of making treasured memories together, the craving is often to simply sprawl on the sofa with a glass of something cold during the summer months or a hot chocolate during the cosier times of the year. And, at Your Devon Escape, we simply cannot forget your furry family members, so there are plenty of dog friendly options too!

Devon boasts many excellent places for a family holiday. From coastal to countryside, hidden havens and quaint historic towns. Below we have put together a brief guide for what we think are the best places to stay in Devon for families.

Bigbury

This is simply beach living at its best. With views overlooking one of the best beaches in Devon and Burgh Island, enjoy picturesque ocean scenery for miles. This iconic setting is perfect for a holiday in both stormy weather and glorious sunshine. Try out a new water sport, go rockpooling, with lifeguards present on the beach during the summer months. There are a variety of delicious restaurants nearby to try local seafood in historic settings such as the Oyster Shack; the perfect family-friendly spot for a lunch or evening meal.

For non-beach related activities, take the short drive to Plymouth to explore the Hoe, Barbican and Plymouth Aquarium. Or head into Kingsbridge for a swim at the Leisure Centre and trip to the park. Bigbury is also located on the South West Coast Path, so many fabulous walks are on offer. Check out our blog post for our favourites on Your Devon Escape.

Brixham

Part of the English Riviera, this beautiful little town is set around a stunning fishing harbour. It is ideal location for families who love beautiful views, boats, and sandy beaches. And the best thing about this destination is that most activities are free! Enjoy fish and chips, the South West Coast Path, and have a go at the locally-loved ‘sport’ of crabbing. Stroll through the harbour, check out Breakwater Beach and the Shoalstone Outdoor Pool (open only through the summer months). Visit the replica of The Golden Hind, the ship that Sir Francis Drake captained, that is docked in the harbour, or the museum on land to learn about the local history.

Or if you fancy venturing further afield, there are lots of excellent attractions a short bus, car, or ferry journey away including Babbacombe Model Village, Kents Cavern, Paignton Zoo, and Splashdown. Whatever the weather, there are endless family fun to be had in this beautiful town. But, for more rainy-day ideas, head to our blog post. Across the water, hop on the historic steam train to explore the coast of the English Riviera.

Dartmouth is surrounded by beautiful beaches and hidden coves. It is the perfect location for a summer beach holiday. Hit up some local favourites or head out on an expedition along the South West Coast Path to discover your own hidden gem. Or in the cooler months, indulge in the many fantastic family friendly restaurants. Introduce your children to some local seafood or cosy up next to a log fire as you reflect on your day’s adventures. Slapton & Torcross

Two quaint neighbouring villages in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Torcross offers the stunning Torcross Beach and Slapton the internationally renowned Slapton Ley. A family holiday here can be an educational visit, a relaxing beach break, or both.

Located on the South West Coast Path, enjoy stunning walks no matter the season. Watch the white horses and waves crashing on the dramatic cliffs and beaches during bolder weather or sunbathe with lifeguards present during the summer months. Maybe even give mackerel fishing a go! Make sure to grab a fish and chips at the Start Bay Inn to enjoy on the beach or at one of our cosy self-catered properties in the area.

This special, yet quaint town is like nowhere else in South Devon. Packed full of independent shops, markets and events, it is simply unique. Visit the Castle to learn the local history and enjoy breath-taking views over the town and Dartmoor. Take a trip on the River Dart by paddleboard, kayak, or river cruise.
