Surfing in Devon

When you think of surfing in England, everyone automatically thinks about Cornwall. But its more modest neighbour, Devon, is home to some of the best surf spots in the whole of the UK!  The thing about Devon is that some of it faces south, some of it faces north, and some of it faces west. And west is the biggest golden ticket when surfing. The western shoreline isn’t long in the county, with only ten miles in North Devon. However, this short bout is responsible for some very high-quality waves.

North Devon is home to the North Devon World Surfing Reserve, one of only twelve on the planet! So, they must be doing something right! While the north coast takes the prize in terms of quantity and quality spots, there are also some gems on the south coast that are well worth the visit! Keep reading to find out our favourite spots for surfing in Devon.

Croyde

It would be wrong to start anywhere other than Croyde when discussing surfing in Devon. Renowned for its A-frame barrels which line up like corduroy at low tide, this world-renowned beach has no shortage of surfers which can make the crowds out back hairy at times. The surf here is relatively consistent, providing year-round fun. Enjoy easy summer days, learning in the white water, or brave the chill of the Atlantic winter and be rewarded. There are hire shops and surf schools in the village. We do recommend a lesson or two if you are a novice. Don’t be out of your depth!

Woolacombe

Another North Devon classic is Woolacombe. Loved by bucket-and-space beach goers in the summer as well as surfers all-year-round. This three-mile-long beach is perfect because there is plenty of room for everyone to enjoy. Its mellow waves are a playground for all level surfers. The waves are at their best at low tide, especially with an easterly wind. Keep an eye out for the west and north-west swells for the ultimate conditions! For all your lesson and equipment hire needs, check out the Woolacombe Surf Centre and the many other shops and schools. Woolacombe is also a great place to try out bodyboarding.

Bantham

Bantham is a hotspot for the county’s southern surfers. Known for being the most consistent beach break in the area, you will always find boards out on the waves. Be mindful of the rips from the river and to the left of the beach which can take inexperienced surfers by surprise. The size of the break varies depending on the conditions. Generally, staying closer to the shore is good for beginners, while big swells can bring larger waves a little further out. Bantham is a good spot if you are a kite surfer too!  And there is an excellent pub just up the road if you fancy a drink or a bite after catching the waves.

Saunton Sands

A glorious stretch of beach whose corduroy lines can be seen from the road as it curves around the headland to Croyde. The beach’s consistent waves make for a very popular surf spot. Offering slower waves and longer rides, it is a great spot for beginners (just brace yourself for the paddle out). It is also a favourite for longboarders at low tide but comes with a warning. Be aware of rip current close to the cliffs.

Challaborough

A secret gem in winter when the conditions are right. You will find the best waves at Challaborough with offshore north-westerly winds with a south-westerly swell. The waves can have excellent shape and are mostly left-hand point breaks, offering a relatively long ride. The beach can get quite busy as it offers something for all levels and experience. Just be wary of the hidden rocks, especially at the reef on the right end of the beach. Be sure to stop for an ice cream during the summer months or a hearty post-surf winter warmer when the weather begins to turn.

Bigbury

Bigbury Beach is a favourite amongst surfers and non-surfers alike. It is one of the most reliable beaches in South Devon to surf and is good for beginners. You will find the best conditions when the swell is from the South West and the wind is coming from the North East. You will find great facilities at the beach, including a café, toilets and Discovery Surf School. The School is a great place for equipment hire or lessons!
