Our Favourite Places to Go Crabbing in South Devon

Crabbing is a popular pastime for both locals and tourists. No matter what coastal town you are in, there will definitely be one or two people dangling their lines hoping to catch one of these creatures. You never have to look too far to spot a crabber! It is an inexpensive and fun activity, perfect for both young and old. Grab a bucket, a line and some bait (we recommend bacon or mackerel) and give it a go! A trip to Devon wouldn’t be complete without a crabbing session. So, check out our favourite places to go crabbing in South Devon below!

Brixham

The quaint fishing town of Brixham is a real hotspot for crabbers. With a large and busy harbour, there is plenty of room for adults and children to enjoy the activity. If you are feeling peckish, pop into one of the many fish and chip shops to grab some sustenance! Brixham is the perfect location with lots of places to stock up on crabbing supplies around the harbour.

Dartmouth

Located in the beautiful South Hams, you will find the wonderful riverside town of Dartmouth. It is a popular choice for crabbers. We think the best places to enjoy crabbing are along the embankment or at Bayard’s Cove. There is plenty of space to lay out your tools and get to work! Enjoy views of the River Dart and across to Kingswear as you try to catch some these special creatures. Why don’t you grab a takeaway pint from the pub to sip on whilst you give the sport a go. If you find yourself in the town during their annual regatta, enter the crabbing competition!

Dittisham

Down a windy, country road, not far from Dartmouth, you will find the serene village of Dittisham. It is a crabbing hotspot. The best place to give the activity a go is on the pontoon. Sit and watch the boats cruise by on the River Dart as you wait for the crabs to nibble your bait. A stone’s throw from the FBI and Anchorstone Café, you are never too far from refreshments. Or pack a picnic and enjoy on the Ham overlooking the water, post-crab. It is an idyllic place to give crabbing a go!

Salcombe

Along the cobbled streets of Salcombe, you will find Victoria Quay. It is a favourite crabbing spot in the town. Grab your supplies and get yourself set up. Some of the quay provides a small wall, the perfect spot for smaller children that are often fearless and eager crabbers. It is an ideal location to spend some time admiring the rolling hills and stunning estuary. Be sure to check the tide times.

Stoke Gabriel

This village is on a quaint creek of the River Dart. Its rural location means it can often be overlooked by tourists, but it is honestly a hidden gem! Lower your line along the quay, the shore or at the dam. The nearby café and beautiful landscape make it the ideal location to spend an afternoon or two.
