Blackawton is a quaint village situated in the rolling hills of South Devon. There are lots of options for walks in the area, many with views over Start Bay and the surrounding moorland. Blackdown Rings & The Upper Avon Valley | 6 Miles
A circular walk through the peaceful Avon Valley with stunning views of the Blackdown Rings and the Iron Age Fort. There is one steep ascent on this walk so it is unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. For the perfect walk, you will find it here, in the heart of Devon’s countryside.
Blackpool Sands, Strete and Stoke Fleming Loop | 4.5 Miles
This walk can be done as two smaller circular routes or joined up to make a longer figure of eight stomp. The loop offers great coastal views, green lanes, glorious beaches and plenty of history and wildlife along the way. Start in Strete to complete the full circular route, or at Blackpool Sands for the shorter version. Be mindful of when to keep your dog on the lead!
Dartmouth Town Trail | 1.6 Miles
This two-hour circular walk takes you around the historical naval town of Dartmouth. Follow the adventures of pirates and merchants, kings and fishermen, taking in the local culture on the way. The route is level the whole way, except for one steep climb. There are plenty of restaurants, cafés, and pubs along the way should you need a refreshment break. The walk forms part of the wider South West Coast Path which runs alongside the beautiful town of Dartmouth. You could always extend your walk to explore part of the path!
Dartmouth to Dittisham & Greenway Loop | 8 Miles
Wander through Old Mill Woods on the Raleigh Estate, owned by BRNC. Walk through beautiful farmland and admire the views of the River Dart. Take in the wildlife and watch the boats sail by. This walk is a beautiful combination of fields and country lanes with stunning river and countryside views. Stop at the FBI or the Anchorstone in Dittisham before crossing the river and following the path back to Kingswear. Stop to explore Agatha Christie’s holiday home. Or catch the Dittisham ferry back to Dartmouth to give the legs a break!
‘Green Lanes’ around Cornworthy | 6 Miles
A circular walk through some of Devon’s historic ‘green lanes’. Enjoy a stomp through South Devon’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with views from the coast to the moors. The route starts in Cornworthy and takes you through woodland, green lanes and fields to the quaint villages of Tuckenhay and Allaleigh before returning to the start. On a clear day, you can see right across the South Hams countryside to Dartmoor, including Haytor and all the way to the sea at Torbay. It is a beautiful and scenic countryside walk. Take your pooch along for the ride but be mindful with their lead.
Jubilee Way | 4 Miles
This walk was created to honour the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. It will take you through rolling hills, National Trust woodland and offers great views of Dartmouth and Kingswear. Don’t miss Dartmouth Castle Tea Rooms for a well-deserved refreshment and maybe even stop for a swim at Castle Cove if the tide is out!
Torcross to Dartmouth Loop | 10 Miles Return or 5 Miles One Way
This walk can be broken down into shorter routes. There are various spots perfect to turn around or hop on a bus back to the start. The hike follows the South West Coast Path, offering beautiful coastal and countryside views. Follow country lanes, green fields, and make sure to watch out for farm animals! Pass beaches and hidden coves; maybe choose one to return to later!
