Castle Drogo
Where dramatic architecture meets innovative family home, discover the last ‘castle’ to be built in England. Built in the 20th century, Castle Drogo overlooks the beautiful Teign Gorge. Explore the ancient gorge, teeming with wildlife on the trails along the river. Enjoy quiet woodlands and sea views as you amble along the wooded trail. This National Trust site in Devon is also home to gardens created over one hundred years ago, carved into the landscape. It is a beautiful place to visit no matter the season. Located on Dartmoor, learn some local history and enjoy the natural beauty that Devon has to offer at this wonderful Castle. Coleton Fishacre
A 1920s country retreat complete with tropical gardens by the sea. This country home of the D’Oyly Carte family allows you to travel back in time to the Jazz Age. This beautiful property was built in the Arts and Crafts style, with stunning Art Deco elegance. A light, joyful atmosphere fills the rooms, and music plays, echoing the family’s Gilbert and Sullivan connections. You can get an insight into 1920s life ‘upstairs and downstairs’, from the glamorous Saloon and the airy servants’ rooms. The RHS accredited garden is home to exotic plants, herbaceous borders and sea views. Wander the paths, weaving through tranquil ponds and tender plants from the Mediterranean, South Africa and New Zealand. Enjoy views over the rugged coast towards Kingswear and the Mewstone, popular for seabirds and seals. Stop for some light refreshments in the café and explore the wonderful goodies in the shop. Greenway
Explore the house and gardens of the home that author Agatha Christie once resided in. The house is set in the 1950s, allowing you to step back in time and visit the house that Christie spent summers and Christmases. The house is filled with a vast collection of novels, ceramics, silvers and more collected by Christie’s family over the years. Explore the history pre-Christie when the house was built and owned be a sea merchant. Explore the garden and boathouse, wandering down to the river edge. Look out across the Dart estuary towards Dittisham and why not even hop on the ferry across to explore the village. Killerton
A family home and estate near Exeter. A glorious landscape garden surrounded by parkland and a fine 18th century house. Once home to generations of the Acland family, this friendly Georgian property also houses the annually changing historic fashion exhibit. The historic parkland surrounding the property offers extensive woodland and an ancient Iron Age fort. It is the perfect place for a stroll, with so much for the kids and pooches to explore. The formal gardens are of great historic significance, with a famous collection of shrubs and specimen trees. If gardening is your thing, then this is something to not miss! With play areas for all ages, two cafés and a delightful shop, there is something for everyone at this historic spot.
Overbeck’s Garden
Overlooking Salcombe, you will find one of the most popular town attractions. Discover a world in a garden. A hidden paradise filled with subtropical foliage and colourful blooms. Terraced into the cliffs above Salcombe, wander tranquil paths with views of the sea framed by towering palms. Inside the property, you will find quirky natural history and art exhibitions. The gardens are brimming with a unique variety of plants from around the world. The grounds and house are a fitting tribute to the eccentric scientist and inventor, Otto Overbeck. Learn of the scientist’s life and work as you explore the house and grounds. It is the perfect activity when visiting the area. This rare survival of a working 18th century estate including farmland, beaches, salt marshes, meadows, woodland and an estuary, is a wonder to explore. Overlooking the River Plym and set in a rolling landscape, the house is full of treasures, stories and intrigue to discover. Explore the creative work by Kauffman and other artists and makers at Saltram. The garden offers layers of history, planting and tranquillity to be explored. From 18th century sweeping lawns, to an ancient lime tree avenue, exotic planting and garden follies.
