The Best Things to Do in the Rain in Dartmouth

You may be wondering what to do on a rainy day in Dartmouth.  It’s often obvious what to do when the sun is shining, but there is more to the town than meets the eye.  Dartmouth has so much on offer rain or shine.  Put that coat on and head out to try one of the activities recommended below on Your Devon Escape!

Afternoon Tea

A great British tradition, a Devon cream tea.  Pop in for a delicious cream tea at one of the many cafés in Dartmouth.  It is simply a must on your staycation.  Enjoy a homemade scone whilst enjoying each other’s company, reminiscing on the best bits of Your Devon Escape.  Though, make sure to put the jam and cream on the right way. Dartmouth Castle

One of the most beautifully located fortresses in England.  A good family day out whatever the weather.  Learn about Dartmouth’s history whilst exploring the old castle and fort.  Admire the wonderful views out to sea and what the white horses in the ocean on a rainy day.  The castle is open on weekends throughout the winter and is accessible by foot or by car.  Stop for a coffee, or lunch at the Castle Tea Rooms.

Dartmouth Colouring Book

Created in Dartmouth by a local family.  Order online before your trip to explore Dartmouth in a more creative way.  Take it home with you to complete whilst you reminisce over your trip as a family.  Colour at home on a rainy day whilst staying in one of our lovely Dartmouth properties.

Dartmouth Museum

Occupying part of the historic Butterwalk, the building holds as much history as there is to learn inside.  There are extensive collections of artefacts, models, paintings, and photographs all related to Dartmouth’s history.  The museum is run by volunteers who are eager to pass their knowledge on to people of all ages.  The museum is open seven days a week throughout the year so pop in to learn more about the area and the local history.

Olive Pots

Book the kids in for a pottery workshop in Dartmouth’s market square.  Spend a couple of hours learning how to make a unique holiday momentum and spend time browsing the array of stunning handcrafted pieces Olivia has on display.  Holding small group sessions, enjoy a private family workshop to learn some of the arts of pottery.

Sandquay (Old Mill Woods)

These woods find themselves behind Britannia Royal Naval College.  If you fancy a slightly more shaded walk on a hot day, this is the place to head.  Take a short circular walk around the woods, taking in the views of the creek.  The perfect walk for a rainy day, where you are sheltered by all the wonderful trees.

Sunday Roast

A Sunday roast is one of those classic English dishes that we all know and love.  Whilst the roast experience can be all about the cooking, Dartmouth has many excellent options for those that may want to venture out.  Sit by the fire and watch the rain fall outside, whilst tucking into some delicious roast potatoes.  Check out our journal post for recommendations on places to enjoy that perfect Sunday fix!

The Flavel Arts & Cinema Centre

The Flavel is the cultural centre of Dartmouth and hosts a variety of regular groups alongside having a cinema and library.  From language classes, musical workshops, holiday activities for children, and fitness classes, they have an action-packed calendar.  It is the perfect place for a rainy day activity.  Whether you pop in to grab a book and have a read in the library, book into a group or fancy a film, they have you covered.  Check out their website and book today on Your Devon Escape.

Woodlands

Being the largest theme park in Devon, it is packed with fun for all the family.  It holds the largest indoor play areas in the South West, making it perfect for wet or cold days.  Open weekends only in winter, pop in for a whole day or just an afternoon and let the kids run wild.  Woodlands offers endless fun whether it is raining, or the sun is shining, so make sure you pop in on Your Devon Escape.
